Karen Hastie Williams Joins the Board of SunTrust Banks, Inc.

SunTrust Banks, Inc., Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer L. Phillip Humann announced today that Karen Hastie Williams, a partner in the Washington, DC law firm of Crowell & Moring, has been elected to SunTrust's Board of Directors.

Ms. Williams joined Crowell & Moring in 1981 and represents large and small corporations that contract with the Federal Government and trade associations that focus on federal contracts for architectural, engineering and related services.

Prior to joining Crowell & Moring, Ms. Williams served as Administrator of the Office of Federal Procurement Policy in the Carter White House and Chief Counsel of the U.S. Senate Committee on the budget where she gained extensive knowledge in the areas of federal contract law and federal funding issues generally.

Ms. Williams served on the board of directors of Crestar Financial Corporation, which was acquired by SunTrust in 1998. She subsequently served on the advisory board of SunTrust Bank in the Greater Washington Region, where SunTrust ranks #1 in market share. In addition to her service on the corporate boards of directors of The Chubb Corporation and Federal National Insurance Company, Continental Airlines, Inc. and the Gannett Co., Ms. Williams is a member of several national and local non-profit organizations with a focus on education and opportunities for African-American children, affordable housing, and civil rights.
